The journey into the heart of the climate disaster In Madagascar, the children have stopped going to school and are forced to dig the mineral "mica" out of 40 meter deep mines. Due to climate change, Madagascar is hit by extreme drought and the children's families can no longer cultivate the land and mining is their only way of survival. In South Sudan, climate change is causing severe flooding and more than 600,000 people are living in mud on small islands and mounds. The children swim at school. South Sudan is under water. Climate change has triggered torrential rains that cause the Nile to overflow its banks. All roads are washed away and the mud makes it impossible for planes to land. Photographer Jan Grarup crawled into the deep mines on Madagascar and sailed with one of the UN's speedboats in South Sudan.
