Garry Kasparov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1963, and at the age of just 12 became U18 chess champion of the USSR and world champion in the U20 category at 17. He became internationally famous at the age of 22 as the youngest ever World Chess Champion in 1985. He defended his title five times, including a legendary streak against arch-rival Anatoly Karpov. Kasparov broke Bobby Fischer's record in 1990, and his own record remained unbeaten until 2013. His famous matches against the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue in 1996-97 were instrumental in bringing artificial intelligence in combination with chess to light. Kasparov has been a contributing editor for The Wall Street Journal since 1991 and is a frequent commentator on topics such as politics and human rights. He frequently lectures to business and political audiences worldwide on technology, strategy, politics and how to achieve a strong mindset. Kasparov's book "How Life Imitates Chess" on strategy and decision making is available in over 20 languages. He is the author of two acclaimed series of chess books, "My Great Predecessors" and "Modern Chess". Kasparov's latest book "Deep Thinking: Where Machine Intelligence Ends and Human Creativity Begins" from May 2017, describes his battles against Deep Blue, his years of research and lectures on humans and artificial intelligence and his collaboration with the Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford . He has stated thus: "AI will transform everything we do and we must press forward ambitiously in the one area robots cannot compete with humans: in dreaming big dreams. Our machines will help us achieve them. Instead of worrying about what machines can do, we should worry more about what they still cannot do.” A living legend in a sport with hundreds of millions of followers, he has spent twenty years as the world's leading chess player examining decision-making, strategic thinking, and technology while becoming a global human rights figure.
