Arne Christensen is 70 years old, blind, and a passionate cross-country runner. In 2016, he was the first blind person to complete the world's hardest skiing race, the Arctic Circle Race, and he will now be the first blind person to ski to the South Pole – 111 km from the 89th south latitude to the South Pole. It's big and wild and almost unimaginable! …but the goal is set!

During his many years as a social worker at the Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Arne Christensen has learned that many blind people have a low belief in their own possibilities and need role models to look up to when they have to create visions for their own lives.

He is a role model for other blind people, and will promote the sighted's knowledge of what blind people can do.

* He will show blind people the importance of daring to set high goals for themselves.
* He wants to show that blind people can also participate in extreme sports.
* He wants to show that all people have resources.

Arne Christensen

Arne has a career as a top athlete, and because he is blind, it has been very demanding and presented many challenges along the way. Over 40 years he has gradually lost his sight, and for the last 25 years he has been completely blind. He has used sports to gain income to cope with everyday life without sight, and in addition to setting himself personal goals, he has also set himself the goal of being a role model for other blind people and to change the perception of the sighted about what blind people can do.

Arne is a pioneer and participated in the first Danish team in the Paralympic Winter Games in cross-country skiing and biathlon for the blind and has participated in a further 4 Games. He is the first Danish blind cross-country skier who has completed the 90 km Vasaloppet, the 54 km Birkebeiner and the 160 km Arctic Circle Race, the world's toughest ski race. About the latter achievement, he had the documentary film 'Tracks in the Dark' produced, which he has lectured on and shown more than 50 times.

In April 2023, Arne will go on a skiing expedition to the North Pole as the first blind person ever.
Arne's lecture is about overcoming challenges in one's life, setting goals and achieving them. As part of the lecture, Arne will show the 40-minute film 'Tracks in the Dark'. The film is about Arne's preparations and participation in the Arctic Circle Race. The images of the magnificent Greenlandic nature form a beautiful setting for the atmosphere of struggle and victory that characterizes the film. In the lecture, Arne touches on both the difficulties surrounding vision loss and funny anecdotes from situations throughout life as a blind person. The lecture is about daring to believe in oneself and one's resources and to plunge into the uncertain.

Willpower

Arne Christensen er 70  år, blind, og passioneret langrendsløber. Han var i 2016 den første blinde, som gennemførte verdens hårdeste skiløb, Arctic Circle Race, og han vil nu være den første blinde, der løber på ski til Sydpolen – 111 km fra 89. sydlig breddegrad til Sydpolen. Det er stort og vildt, og næsten ikke til at forestille sig! …men målet er sat!

Arne Christensen har gennem sine mange år som socialrådgiver på Instituttet for Blinde og Svagsynede erfaret, at mange blinde har en lav tro på egne muligheder og har brug for forbilleder at spejle sig i, når de skal skabe visioner for egen tilværelse.

Han er rollemodel for andre blinde, og vil fremme seendes viden om, hvad blinde kan.
