With a course, participants gain a deeper understanding of culture and how culture affects communication with ethnic minorities.

During the course, new tools for the cultural meeting are tested in practice in the form of a homework assignment, where the participants work actively to translate theoretical knowledge into new workflows. With the homework, the new knowledge is implemented to a greater extent in the workplace.

A course consists of 2 modules or more, depending on needs, and can last full or half days. The modules consist of a mixture of presentations, reflection, exercises and debate, where the participants gain knowledge, self-insight and knowledge sharing. Esma Birdi always adapts the content and exercises to the specific target group. Great emphasis is placed on the participants gaining knowledge that is relevant and useful in their everyday life.

Esma Birdi

The culture meeting in practice

Esma Birdi is from Turkey and grew up in Denmark, where she has gained a very special insight from the objective role of an interpreter. Here, she has time and again faced the meeting between "the system" and ethnic minorities. She has experienced how cases have many nuances and angles, and a dream of better integration processes.

Esma Birdi has since worked to make a success out of integration, and has made a difference in her own way and, among other things, has been a member of:

- The Government's Democratic Committee
- The Family and Working Life Commission
- The National Dialogue Forum, Ministry of Education

Esma Birdi has also taught cultural sociology at the Police School for 11 years and is a consultant for the Danish Women's Association. She is a prominent adviser to ministries, other public institutions and private companies. Esma Birdi is working hard to expand her already great knowledge of cultural differences, she has, among other things, been to the US – at the expense of the American embassy – to study the education of ethnic minorities and the police's handling of racial differences as well as the prevention of extremism.

Esma is an exciting person who is passionate about everything she does. She loves to learn from herself and can tell countless instructive stories about differences being strength, and in 2003 she earned the Venstres Frihedspris, as well as being included in Krak's Blue Book in 2016.

Her extensive experience in the field of integration makes her a valuable and professional adviser. Esma teaches, writes books on integration, coaches and prepares holistic action plans on integration for institutions, schools and municipal companies.

Esma has broad knowledge of teaching cultural understanding and communication between people who have a different frame of reference than Danish. She has a large professional and private network, which enables her to collaborate widely


As a public employee, you meet ethnic minorities, and from time to time you find yourself in a situation where even an interpreter cannot help. Even when speaking the same language, we all have different prerequisites for how we understand what is being communicated, with the result that sometimes misunderstandings and even conflicts arise, making work ineffective and slow.

In such situations, a "cultural interpreter" is needed. One who can not only translate the spoken words, but also the assumptions behind them. On this course, the participants have the opportunity to develop their skills as a cultural interpreter, so that they will be stronger in the future when meeting ethnic minorities. The course consists of a mixture of presentations, reflection, exercises and debate, where the participants gain knowledge, self-insight and knowledge sharing.

The content and exercises are always adapted to the specific target group. Esma Birdi attaches great importance to the participants gaining knowledge that is relevant and useful in their everyday life.

It's about female empowerment. The desire to live up to other people's expectations must not stand in the way of living out your own wishes and dreams.

It can be difficult to find out what you want for yourself, and not least to find the inner strength it takes to put it into practice - the courage to become a pilot in your own life. We want to encourage more women to do this.

Through the lecture, Esma Birdi starts from her own story about how she got married into an arranged marriage at a very young age and, not least, how after many years of marriage she found the courage and strength to break out of this life to create her own after 18 years of marriage (you can also read more about her story in the book: 'A life in two worlds').

Based on Esma's story, members are inspired to see that they themselves can make a difference in their own lives by first and foremost finding out what they want in their lives and advice on how to achieve it.

Become a pilot in your own life - female empowerment

Course aimed at real estate officials in housing departments with an ethnically mixed resident composition.

Security and good neighborliness are key elements for a well-functioning housing department. When many people with different cultural backgrounds have to live close to each other, cultural differences can potentially affect their mutual relations.

In this course, Esma Birdi equips property officials and administrative staff to work with cultural differences, so that the risk of misunderstandings and conflict is reduced.
On the course, the participants get a presentation on culture and communication, and work is done on how cultural understanding can strengthen communication. Based on concrete examples from the participants' everyday life, the new knowledge is put in relation to the practical work.

Along the way, the participants get the opportunity to reflect on how they can create even better relationships with residents from other ethnic backgrounds, as well as how to create common values in the housing department. These values can be around topics such as: waste management; use of common areas; noise level; ring tone; vandalism; etc., all written and unwritten rules, which greatly affect safety and neighborliness.

Cultural intelligence in young people – Workshop with Esma Birdi targeting young people, primarily with a different ethnic background than Danish.

Cultural intelligence is about being able to act wisely in the cultural meeting. When you strengthen young people's cultural intelligence, they stand stronger in the meeting with society and other citizens, because they have the necessary knowledge and understanding that is required to be able to act in an appropriate way in situations where culture comes into play.

The workshop was originally intended as teaching material for youth education, in a project between the Institute for Integration and the now deceased filmmaker Finn Nørgaard. In the workshop, the participants get to work with a case where they have to solve the challenges associated with creating good integration and coexistence for everyone. Through the case work and the subsequent discussion, the participants reflect on how to accommodate different groups, each of which has its own view of a given situation and how best to solve it.

Through reflection and discussion, the participants not only gain a greater knowledge of culture and cultural differences, but they also become more aware of how they themselves perceive the world and that this may be different from how other people see things. In this way, they gain an understanding of the factors that underlie the fact that people react the way they do, as well as why good integration is so difficult to achieve.
