Having been taught in a non formal educational manner, Chan’nel Thomas has had the freedom and the expertise of many other incredible artists, makers, inventors, thinkers and scientists within arms length all most of her life.

Her passion for creating goes much further than just making a prototype of a product – she wants to ensure that the product meets its purpose, shelf life and economy before being recycled or re-used. Her method is to design with the material in mind rather than the machine, therefore making the product more sustainable within a circular economy.

However, not a lot is done on a citizen science level to inform and inspire those on the ground to become more eco friendly. If the future is about saving the earth, we should think about being eco conscious and innovative now. 2020 Future is a glimpse into alternative materials being made, and how we can conserve efforts towards saving and finding alternatives to plastics. Plastics require various substances such as petroleum and highly toxic chemicals to deliver the structure and tactility that plastic gives. But what if we reached out for renewable substances such as feedstock? What if we learned about designing for manufacturability? 2020 Future

Over 3,6 kg of waste is pulled weekly from Copenhagen’s canals, and over 3/4 of that contains plastic. Plastic is one of the world’s biggest offenders when it comes to pollution, destroying marine habitats and threatening aquatic ecosystems. What if we were to change our outlook on plastics?

We use plastic in everything – our clothing, cars and houses all contain a small amount of plastic. But what if we were to start looking at new alternatives to plastic using nature and biomimicry that is evident all around us? Nature works in amazing ways and can provide natural eco items that are twice as strong as steel and ideal for all our needs as humans. Is this the future of plastics?

Biohacking is a term rather largely used and can mean anything from AI chip implantation down to GMO’S. But that’s not all, ethics within biohacking have to follow a strict formula in order to thrive and survive. Biohacking is more than cloning DNA and making lab grown meat. Biohacking - What is this?

The fashion industry has two very big issues, but one is their dirty secret. Every day, over 44 metric tonnes of waste is dumped into waterways around the world. This dye comes from various textile applications but mainly from dying leather and also dying our jeans. But there’s a better solution and it lies all around us – it’s even underneath our feet! By applying nature with simple citizen science you can learn how to dye your garments using a friendly eco bacteria, which is safe for humans and living organisms to handle whilst also reducing the use of valuable ressources such as water and energy. In this hands-on workshop Chan’nel Thomas takes you from basics to expert within 5 hours and allows you to understand the true meaning of slow fashion and ecovative design.
